One of the most common questions in hotshot trucking is whether a CDL is needed. The answer depends on the weight ratings of the truck and trailer, not just how heavy a particular load is.

Class A

A Class A CDL is required for a combination with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more when the towed unit has a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 pounds. Many one-ton duallies paired with larger gooseneck trailers reach this threshold.

Class B

A Class B CDL covers a single vehicle rated at 26,001 pounds or more, or such a vehicle towing a trailer rated at 10,000 pounds or less. This applies more often to larger chassis-cab trucks than to pickups.

Below the thresholds

Combinations under these ratings generally do not require a CDL, unless they carry hazardous materials requiring placards or are designed for 16 or more passengers. Some hotshot operators choose equipment ratings to stay below the CDL threshold, but must still follow other federal rules that apply at 10,001 pounds and above.

Ratings versus actual weight

Federal definitions use the higher of the weight rating or actual weight. Even if you run light, a combination rated above the threshold may require a CDL. Check the door sticker and trailer plate, and ask your state licensing agency if you are unsure.

Why it matters for insurance

Insurers want drivers licensed correctly for the equipment they operate. Driving without a required CDL can lead to out-of-service orders and coverage problems after a crash. Tell your agent the ratings of every truck and trailer you use.

Planning ahead

If you plan to upgrade to a heavier trailer later, check whether it will push your combination over the threshold. Getting a CDL before you need it gives you flexibility in equipment and loads.
