Know your weight ratings
Have the gross vehicle weight rating of the truck and trailer, and the gross combination weight rating, ready. They decide which rules apply and help the agent quote the right coverage and filings.
Describe the freight honestly
Equipment, vehicles, oilfield parts and building materials each carry different cargo risks. Tell the agent what you haul most and what you might occasionally take, so the cargo policy does not exclude your loads.
Experience counts
Insurers weigh commercial driving experience heavily. Note any history with another carrier, towing or similar work. If you are new, ask what would improve your options over time.
Free quote, no hook
A hotshot quote request is free, and you can turn down any offer.
Broker requirements
Many hotshot loads come through brokers and load boards, and brokers set their own insurance requirements: liability limits, cargo limits, and sometimes how many years the authority has been active. Collect the requirements from the brokers you want to work with and share them with the agent, so the policy you buy opens the doors you need.
After coverage starts, ask the agent how to request certificates quickly, since brokers often need one before they release a load.
Renewals
Review your rig list and loads before each renewal.
